Community created Managed Wrapper now available on MDXInfo

The Direct3D 10 samples require Vista Dec CTP (build 5270) which is now (Dec 20 2005) available for MSDN subscribers

Faqs

Why is it Direct *3D* 10 and not DirectX 10?
DirectX is the family of APIs, it does not have a version. Each API in the family has its own versions. So Direct3D is the API which is currently at version 9. Version 10 is in beta and will only be available for Vista. Yes, there are references to DirectX 10 out there, but they are wrong.

What is Windows Graphics Framework (WGF)?
There were announcements (I have no idea how official) that DirectX under Vista would be renamed to WGF. WGF1.0 would be the upgrade to Direct3D 9 for Vista and WGF2.0 would be Direct3D 10. However this name change was later reversed and we are back to Direct3D 9Ex (the slightly upgraded Direct3D 9 for Vista) and Direct3D 10. See WGF article on wikipedia.

I'm confused. Is that the same as Windows Presentation Framework (WPF) aka Avalon?
No, but all these 'foundations' are getting a little confusing. WPF (formerly code named Avalon) is the presentation layer for Vista. WPF uses Direct3D 9Ex for its rendering but they have no other connection. See WPF developer Center

There are no managed assemblies - when will they be available
There is no official announcement on a schedule.

  • 1/19/06, DirectX Beta Newsgroups
Zman: ...while we are talking about it, any plans on when there will be managed bits in the D3D10 preview/alpha/beta/technology preview
Tom Miller: unfortunately I'm going to need to skip the D3D10 question for the near term.
  • 4/6/06: MDXInfo releases a D3D10 managed wrapper created by Ralf "Demirug" Kornmann. Of course this still requires Vista, and still runs in RefRast and is far from a complete API - but its enough to run a couple of the SDK tutorials. Nice going Ralf.
